orca winter expeditions
Far the most popular expedition we offer due the 80-90% likelihood of seeing orcas and/or humpback whales during your trip with Northern Whales Expeditions. We follow the pods in their search for food which is plentiful at this time of the year. Come and join us for an once-in-a-lifetime experience on board of the Lady Kate to swim and snorkel with orcas (killer whales) as well as humpback whales under the northern light surrounded by the most stunning scenery. You do not have to be a diver! Snorkelling with the whales is for everybody. We can teach you snorkelling on-board.
Killer whales (orcas) and humpback whales have been known to follow the herring and mackerel for a great feast in the Norwegian waters. These fish appear annually in huge numbers close to the Norwegian coast attracting predators that feed on them and where there are herring there are orcas, humpback whales, seabirds, dolphins, seals, sea lions and many more. The best time of the year to catch a glimpse of these sea giants is between October through to February.
- Day 1: Arrival at Tromso Airport and transfer to the harbour to board the Lady Kate where you will be shown to your cabin. There is full board during your stay with nutritious breakfast, light lunch and a full dinner prepared by our on-board chef freshly every day. Wine and beer are served with your dinner. Water, soft and hot drinks as well as snacks are available throughout the day.
- Day 2-6: We start our journey by following the herring and the pods of orcas and humpback whales surrounded by the most stunning scenery, the lights of the Arctic winter and some astonishing wildlife. - Our rescue divers are always with you ensuring your safety in the water. Prepare for a cold but breath-taking experience while you are observing, swimming, diving or snorkelling with killer whales. When not whale watching you are more than welcome to join our team on the bridge and get to know them. We are very friendly and outgoing and we love to talk about our passion, whales and many more. Alternatively, you can sit and relax in the lounge with a good book and a cup of coffee. We also have a big selection of movies (popcorn included too), board games as well as a big screen TV in case you wanted to plug in your camera and relive the best moments of your days aboard. The team have the utmost respect for the whales (and all animals) and their habitat and we would never do anything to stress the whales or disturb them in their natural surroundings. We adhere to ethical wildlife-viewing practices which ensure that our expeditions are never intrusive. In the evenings you will dine and wine in good company with like-minded people and enjoy some entertaining stories from our crew members.
